Exploring The Vung Vieng Floating Village

Location

Vung Vieng floating village lies right at the heart of Bai Tu Long Bay, slightly northeast of Halong Bay, and was founded in the 19th Century. Today there is a population of around 300 people, most of which descend from Vung Vieng’s original inhabitants.

The people of Vung Vieng have lived on the floating village for generations, living a quiet life and making a living from the sea. More recently, growth in local tourism has meant that there’s more money to be made for Vung Vieng locals and many are living better lives than ever before. More affluent residents have tiled houses, television sets and nice furniture.

Experiencing local life

To help show curious tourists what life is like on a floating village, some enterprising locals have set show workshops where visitors can try their hand at weaving their own nets and catching their own fish. There is also the option to take a night time tour and take part in some night time squid fishing.

If you wish to visit Vung Vieng it is best to go early in the morning as Vietnamese daily life starts early. Bai Chay Tourist Wharf and Tuan Chau port have slow local boats and speedboats leaving to Bai Tu Long Bay throughout the day, everyday. Once in the Vung Vieng area visitors must take another small boat to enter the actual village.
